Technical Data for Impact-Modified Bioplastics

CCSPs are 100% biobased additives made from glycerol-ketal acrylates, a byproduct of U.S. biodiesel production. When blended at 5–20 wt% into biodegradable polyesters like polylactide (PLA), CCSPs increase impact strength tenfold (from <20 J/m to >200 J/m) while maintaining anticipated ASTM D6400 industrial-compostability. They’re supplied as masterbatch pellets for easy integration into existing compounding and molding processes.

Unlike petroleum-based additives like butadiene or butyl acrylate, CCSPs are fully compostable and biobased, ensuring no microplastic residue. They enhance PLA’s toughness without sacrificing stiffness or compostability, eliminating the need for multilayer structures like PLA/PBAT. This reduces material costs, simplifies processing, and aligns with circular-economy goals.

CCSPs are designed for rigid, compostable products such as food packaging, consumer goods (e.g., golf tees), and agricultural films. They’re compatible with standard twin-screw compounding and extrusion/injection molding, making them a drop-in solution for compounders and converters. CCSPs are synthesized from surplus glycerol, a low-carbon, domestic feedstock from biodiesel refining. Life-cycle analysis shows that each ton of CCSP-modified PLA avoids ~2.4 t CO₂-equivalent compared to multilayer alternatives. Preliminary hydrolysis data supports our expectation that CCSP-modified PLA will achieve 90% mass loss in ≤10 weeks under accelerated compost conditions (50°C, pH 3), which will meet ASTM D6400 standards.

CCSP technology is at TRL 4–5, with pilot-scale production validated through NSF-funded research (CB² award #2113695). We’re refining core-to-shell ratios and scaling processes via planned NSF, DOE, USDA, and State of Iowa supported projects. Paid trials with partners like NatureWorks and EvolveGolf are underway, targeting TRL 6 by 2026.
